PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

At Southampton we like to see our juniors develop into rounded hockey people.  This means having an understanding of the rules and how they are interpreted and a knowledge of the technical skills and how they are coached.  To ensure this we encourage our juniors to get involved with the following programmes

How to get involved with UMPIRING

We aim to get young players umpiring at our Mini (under 8s & 10s) tournament once they have a basic understanding of the rules, in particular the safety aspects.

This allows them to gain confidence in a friendly atmosphere where they will be supported by adults, giving guidance.

The Club runs, annually, a rules evening where a guest umpire will visit and explain the rules to anybody interested.

If interested the club encourages youngsters to sit the theory paper as a first stage towards obtaining an umpiring award.

The club will then encourage juniors to umpire at junior games (below their own playing age initially) and the join in the summer umpire development run in conjunction with the Ladies Summer Hockey

How to get involved with COACHING

Southampton HC encourages its juniors (and any parents) to start developing as a coach by introducing them to our Under 8s and 10s on a Sunday morning at Southampton Sports Centre.

Here they will learn to work with beginners starting with basic techniques and how to run a fun session.

The club will sponsor their entry into the hockey Leadership Course and will also allow them to gain credits for their Duke of Edinburgh awards.
